Smell sewage. If you can smell it near more than one drain, you probably have a main sewer clog.

See sewage backing up into fixtures like drains, toilets, bathtubs, etc. If more than one drain is backing up, you have a main sewer clog.

Hear gurgling or bubbling noises coming from your pipes.

Use two water appliances at once, and water backs up in one (for example, when you flush the toilet, your bathtub backs up). There is a clog preventing the water from flowing out. With nowhere to go, it backs up.

See your drains clog frequently or are slow to drain. If more than one drain is affected, you probably have a main sewer clog or a break in your sewer line.
